A Surprising Turn of Events
Last month I made a tweet asking people to consider nominating me for the Ringo Awards, if they liked my work in comics. I didn’t feel super confident about suggesting they could nominate me for Best Colorist, so I suggested New Talent as well (or instead), since all my eligible work is technically my first year of work as a comic book colorist.
Later that same day, I learned I was nominated for Best Coloring for the Eisner Awards, known as the Oscars of comics. What!! I had around a week for the idea to settle before the announcement, and yet when it came out… It still didn’t feel real. But surely the Eisner committee knows what they’re doing, right? Impostor syndrome is a hell of a thing!
But here we are. If you’re a comic book professional you can still vote for me, if you feel inclined! ;)
Comic Books
Mad Cave Studios invited me to color the 4th issue of Tales from Nottingham, which is out now! It’s an anthology set in the world of Nottingham, their bestseller series, and most of the artists involved won the Mad Cave Studios’ 2021 Talent Search.
This particular issue was written by Dylan Essex, with art by Miguel Puerta, colors by me, and letters by Taylor Esposito.
In 1192, the Church’s tithe is stolen from under Friar Tuck’s nose in a heist orchestrated by a group of fledgling Merry Men, just as the Archbishop arrives to collect it. Tuck must battle with his conscience as he hunts down every last conspirator and every last coin by force. Never-before-seen mysteries confront Everard Blackthorne, the Sheriff of Nottingham, culminating in an investigation that will lead directly into the climactic events of Nottingham Vol. 3.

What I’ve Been Enjoying
It was another slow month in terms of reading. I actually had a couple of weeks off and just… binge-watched shows and did almost nothing, instead of reading, or writing, or finally finishing my run of Mass Effect Legendary Edition! It wasn’t quite enough to not feel tired (that’s my secret – I’m always tired), but it helped a little bit.
I did, however, read this lovely graphic novel, Over My Dead Body, by Sweeney Boo, about a school for witches and wizards and the trouble they get up to in the forbidden forests that lay beyond the Younwity's Institute of Magic. One of them has a cat familiar who is always anxious and worried about everything, and that would be exactly me, if I ever turned into a witch’s familiar. It might already be.
The art is amazing, and the colors are gorgeous. I definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone!
I’ve also been enjoying the new series by Critical Role, Candela Obscura! It has such a creepy, eerie tone, the vibes are just right! It comes out on YouTube on June 8th and anyone can listen to it, even if they don’t know anything about Critical Role (it’s a whole new game, world, everything!) or this new game system.
It’s been 5 years since this thread on Twitter happened, and revisiting it made me happy, so here it is! This time you get someone else’s cats, but it will be worth it!
