I didn’t write a newsletter in July because there wasn’t really a lot to talk about… Not much happened in August either, except me dreading the Summer months while working - and although little bits of news kept pilling up here and there, I kept pushing it back, and now… Here we are! I’d been waiting on a cool announcement, so this will be an extra longer edition of the newsletter!
So, without further ado!
What’s On The Horizon
Comic Books
I have two books coming out soon! The first is MALL GOTH (which was picked for the Kids’ Indie Next list of September/October!), written and illustrated by Kate Leth, and the other is THE MIGHTY NEIN ORIGINS LIBRARY EDITION VOLUME 1, which is a collection of four of the already published Critical Role graphic novels, including two I colored (Caleb and Yasha)!
MALL GOTH comes out September 26, and the Mighty Nein collection on October 10th.
And speaking of Critical Role!!
I’m coloring the Beauregard Lionett graphic novel!! It’s written by Mae Catt, Marisha Ray, and Matthew Mercer, with art by Guilherme Balbi, colors by me, and letters by Ariana Maher! As always, it’s a prequel to the campaign, so anyone can read and enjoy it!
It comes out April 30th, 2024 on comic book stores, and one day later everywhere else.
Beauregard’s backstory will explore her pre-Mighty Nein time with the order of monks known as the Cobalt Soul as the result of falling into criminal activity - something that leads her own father to arrange a kidnapping as a way of disciplining the wayward Beau.
The second issue of The Hunger and the Dusk is out now! I assisted Msassyk on colors, and I might be biased, but these keep getting better and better! Issue #3 comes out next month.
Layout Design
GODS OF METAL: RAGNAROCK, by Hunters Entertainment, is out into the world! I made the layout design for this TTRPG book - I illustrated different chapter borders and headers (12 of them!), spot art, grunge - so much grunge!! - all to bring you this highly energetic, over-the-top RPG filled with glory, teamwork, adventure, and lots of epic music!
(Cover art is by Caleb Cleveland, first illustration by Justin Usher, and character art by Joby Dorr. Creative direction by Noxweiler Berf)
Keep an eye out for more cool projects with Hunters Entertainment in the future!
Illustration
I made some tarot cards for MERMAIDS NEVER DOWN, edited by Zoraida Córdova and Natalie C. Parker! A few years ago I made the Major Arcana set for the VAMPIRES NEVER GET OLD anthology, and now was time for the suit of cups, with mermaids! If you live in the US, you can learn more about to get them here. You can see all the cards on my Instagram.
I heard the next anthology will be about faeries… Let’s see what awaits us then! ;)
What I’ve Been Enjoying
While everyone has been having a lot of fun with Baldur’s Gate 3 (and I hope to join them soon… Maybe… After deadlines?), I finally played Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. I’d just finished a run of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, so jumping from that to this game really was a stark difference in terms of… Everything! The graphics, the gameplay, the falling off into the unknown if you jump the wrong way or one second too late! I really, really enjoyed the game, though, and I can’t wait to try the sequel.
Also, I need a figurine of BD-1. Please.
I’ve also been really enjoying Ahsoka. The latest episode broke my heart! The Clone Wars animated show was what made me want to get a degree in animation (I have a post-grad in 3D modelling!), and I’ve always loved Ahsoka. And without any spoilers, this episode was something special!
Only Murders in the Building is great as always, and I’ve also been enjoying Foundation! I also finally got to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and what a GORGEOUS, gorgeous movie it is!!
I think I can safely say I got out of my reading slump! Look at all these books!! I would recommend all of them, but I’ll give a shout out to Chilvary by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran; Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton; It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood; Scarlet Witch by Steve Orlando, Sara Pichelli, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matthew Wilson, and Cory Petit; Briar by Christopher Cantwell, Germán Garcia, and Mathews Lopes; Hungry Ghost by Victoria Ying; Squire by Sara Alfageeh and Nadia Shammas; and The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton.
Substack is telling me this newsletter is getting too long, so I’ll stop here. Let me know if you pick up any of the books I’ve worked on, or any of the ones I recommended!
Until next time!
